Caught In The Rye is a Mockumentary film by Joel Liss created for his Cinema Production 2 class at Ithaca College. The film centers around a fake psychological experiment set at Cornell in the 70s where Freshmen are forced to read Catcher in the Rye, and only Catcher in the Rye. Aside from doing some of the editing of the final cut, my main job was to create the visual look for the film. I designed the logo, the opening titles, lower thirds, and end credits.
LOGO
The Logo for Caught in the Rye is obviously based off of the cover of the book. I utilized a very similar color scheme and the closest font I could find (the cover of the book appears to be hand lettered).
OPENING TITLES
The opening titles were an interesting beast to edit because I wasn't really given much to work with or much of an idea of what was wanted. I just knew that they wanted something that felt like the Documentary Now opening, and that it needed to include the various fake companies and text messages that I was supposed to create. The good news is, much of the film is shot, well, on film, so I got the scanned version of the film to work with, which had some weird artifacts from the beginning. By reversing those titles and color shifting them to fit the brighter orange color scheme, I was able to integrate everything in a natural way utilizing the 3D camera to create a moving intro that looked thematically coherent.
Here are the two logos I designed for the intro:
Ithaca Documentary Society
Ithaca Documentary Society
LOWER THIRDS
The film has lots of interviews, so I also had to create lower thirds from the fake Ithaca Documentary Society.
